Project Beauty 2021

Do you feel like you can be your authentic self at school & in front of friends?

At school in front of so many of my peers, I tend to have my guard up. I can be my authentic self around my close friends because they know who I truly am as a person, and they know that I’m definitely the type of person to wear my heart on my sleeve and do my best to put others before myself. I’ve gone through many challenges throughout my four years of high school, and sometimes I don’t always feel like I can be my authentic self. I’ve been judged, laughed at, and talked about behind my back by many people, and it made my high school years a little rough. However, I am a strong person, and I was able to overcome those challenges and lead with confidence.

Does makeup/hair make you feel more “presentable” or are you okay with being fresh faced in public?

Having my makeup and hair done before I go out is nice, but isn’t always a must for me. I do LOVE getting glammed up before going to school and going out with friends, but I do also frequently leave the house bare-faced. Sometimes it’s for time’s sake, and other times it’s solely because I want my skin to breathe, and I want to take a break from the constant glam. Don’t get me wrong, when I’ve had a rough week, all it takes is some hair and makeup, and my self confidence immediately rises!

What makes you particularly happy?

Something that makes me particularly happy is spending quality time with my family! As cliche as it sounds, I adore my family. I have a huge support system at home, and I’m ever so grateful that I was blessed enough to have such wonderful parents, and a wonderful brother. Over winter break in December, I lost one of the most important people in my life - my grandma. She was my rock, and my entire world. Every little thing that happened to me, no matter how small, I’d call her to tell her about. I miss her every single day, and having lost her made me realize how important the time spent with family is. I truly value my time spent with my family.

What makes you laugh?

My little brother makes me laugh! My brother and I may be 3 years apart, but we’re super close! He and I have a similar sense of humor, and joke about everything under the sun. I am definitely going to miss his sense of humor and selfless personality when I go off to college in the fall.

How important do you think is physical appearance?

I think physical appearance is valuable, but it isn’t at the top of my list. Kindness and personality rank #1. It’s so important to be kind to one another because you truly never know what the person next to you is going through or what they carry with them everyday. I am mindful of how I look in public, but I’m more mindful of how I treat people. I strive to treat everyone I encounter with kindness and respect, because I would want others to do the same for me.

What is your definition of true beauty?

My definition of true beauty is being able to recognize that beauty isn’t just putting on makeup and looking your best on the outside, it’s treating others, no matter who they are, with kindness and compassion. Beauty is having a passion for things that you love, and sharing your passions with others!

What do you think of the proverb, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder?”

I greatly value and appreciate this proverb because it reminds us that beauty can be seen any way possible. Everyone sees beauty differently, and I believe that just like there’s always some good to a bad situation, there is beauty in everything. It’s important to see good in all things.
